Fun in the garden

Show off your garden this summer

This issue we’ve got some show-stoppers to talk about – be they actual shows, showy plants – or ways to show off in your garden!

In the old days, many people liked to compete with the neighbours to see who could maintain the most perfect patch of green lawn in the street. This still goes on, of course – and nothing reminds us of our lawns like Wimbledon lawn tennis season! However, it’s not just the grass that needs thinking about – in the summer our entire garden can be adversely affected by too little rain – or too much!

As garden designers, we’re often asked about irrigation as part of maintaining healthy trees, plants and lawns. What type of irrigation will depend on the size of your garden, climate, what you intend to grow and ground conditions.

We have more details below but a good garden irrigation system will provide just enough water to keep the ground moist, not soaked, so you don’t have to worry about it. You can actually reduce water consumption if you plan it right.

We hope you enjoy our precious summer days and, whatever you do, make time to sit and relax in your gardens – we can help you with that!

Perfect, pretty phlox

A fantastic addition to any garden is Phlox. It provides lovely, scented flowers in the summer months and is a great bedding plant, as well as making attractive container displays.

The green, green grass of home?

There are several types of irrigation systems. As well as hand watering (and you can use a water butt to conserve water), there are drip-watering systems, garden sprinklers and fully automatic irrigators.

We can also design a system of channels and pools to redistribute excess water across the garden. Or we could install an automatic system of pipes to do the watering. Some larger gardens may require a combination of systems, so do have a chat with us about all the options.

Bushy Beverage

Now the warmer weather has arrived, cool down with a Wimbledon-tennis- inspired fresh strawberry frozen margarita. All you need are: 1 tsp sea salt flakes, 400g frozen strawberries, 120ml tequila, 75ml triple sec, and 1 juiced lime. Moisten and coat the rims of two margarita glasses with salt, blend the other ingredients until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve – game, set and match!

Until next time!
