Fun in the garden

Weather the weather in June!

We’re finally seeing some warmer weather but we’ve also had some extremely wet conditions this spring – and, increasingly, we’re getting droughts in the South East too. So, while it’s hard to predict the weather from one day to the next, you can help your garden (and the environment) by making it more sustainable. We can lend a hand with  this  … more details below.

It’s certainly going to be a busy summer – there are plenty of sports events to watch, as well as places to go to make the most of the lighter evenings. We’ve got a few ideas about that below too …

Have fun!

Pretty Tough

Did you know that the RHS has a Hardiness rating for plants and, when you don’t know if the season will bring drought, or floods – or both – it’s worth investing in plants with the highest hardiness rating – H7. Aster alpinus is H7 and is pretty too. It thrives in a variety of soil types and weather conditions and bees etc love ‘em.

Create a sustainable garden

Firstly, choose the right plants for your garden type and position. We can help you with this. Consider ways to conserve water in your garden in case of drought, like installing a water butt to store rainwater. A technique called crevice planting, where rock is laid on its side to create pockets where succulents and alpines can take root deeper in the ground is another idea.

If your garden is prone to flooding, have a chat with us on how to improve matters, like choosing plants that like a lot of water. Using mulch in the soil soaks up excess water too. And don’t forget to grow some lovely, sustainable vegetables and fruit!

Sing a song of summer

If you like a wander around beautiful gardens in a country estate – and also love opera – do you know about Grange Park Opera at West Horsley Place? You can even enjoy a picnic or more formal dining in the interval! The Grade I listed mediaeval manor house and its surrounding 400 acres is perfect for wildlife walks and wellbeing events as well.

It’s party time!

This month there’s the Euros, athletics, rugby and cricket to watch, so what better excuse to get out the BBQ too and invite your friends round? If you want to be more eco-friendly charcoal grills that use lump charcoal, are better than charcoal briquettes. But gas and electric grills offer a cleaner alternative. You could also try a plant-based menu like kebabs, veggie burgers, grilled corn and portobello mushrooms. More ideas are here.

Bushy Beverage

The official beer of Euro 2024 is German brew Bitburger. Sold at supermarkets and wine merchants (and online), as its name says, it goes well with a BBQ! But if you’d rather go out and enjoy some drinks, there are two beer festivals to enjoy this month – Guildford Beer Festival is at the Guildford Cricket Club, 14 – 15 June – or Godalming Beer Festival is happening at The Burys Field, The Burys, Godalming, on 21 – 22 June.

Until next time!

Our website has a lot more detail about our work – and if you’d like to see what our customers say about us or view some of our designs, that’s on there too. We hope you find it helpful and we’d love to hear from you if you’d like a chat about your garden.
