Fun in the garden

January – time for a makeover!

We hope you had a lovely Christmas. If your New Year resolutions include giving your garden a makeover, you might be wondering where to start. You could benefit from a designer taking a look at the area to assess soil type, position for the sun etc, so that you know what plants to consider. Or you might just want a few new features to give your garden a new lease of life. We take a look at this below.

We also have a few trends and events in 2024 for you so that you can start planning for a fabulous year. Enjoy!

Say hello to hellebores

For year-round interest and flowers from late winter to spring, choose hellebores. They can be planted now and are a valuable nectar source for early bumblebees, especially the open-faced, single flower variety.

Landscaping the perfect garden

A garden designer can create the perfect design to meet your preferences and help you select the right plants and features. As you might expect, hard landscaping involves the inanimate objects such as concrete, bricks, stone, metal, wood, etc. Soft landscaping comprises the living elements like soil, plants, flowers, trees and shrubs, etc.

Soft landscapers can work alongside hard landscapers prepping and planting the borders and laying elements like lawns, irrigation, systems and plant wiring. For more details have a chat with us!

Sustainability trends 2024

In 2024 the trend towards sustainability continues and many consumers looking for garden furniture will find more eco-friendly options. This might include furniture made from sustainable woods like bamboo and teak, as well as recycled materials such as reclaimed timber.

Forest feels

At the 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show there will be six sanctuary gardens, including a Forest Bathing Garden with over 40 birch trees. You can try the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku (Forest Bathing) at several venues in Surrey, including at Alice Holt near Farnham, provided by the Forest Bathing Institute. Forest Bathing is basically a slow, mindful walk in the woodland, where you experience a series of sensory experiences, proven to reduce stress and anxiety.

Bushy Beverage

If you’re not adverse to a wee dram of whisky you’ll be looking forward to Burns Night. So why not make an evening of it at the Hogs Back Brewery near Farnham. They’re hosting a Burns Night to remember on 25th January with a three-course meal and a traditional ceilidh to help the whisky (or non-alcoholic alternative) go down a treat.

Until next time!
