Fun in the garden

From losing yourself in a soothing reverie to pizza parties in your garden – how will you choose to spend your time outside this month?

We’ve got some great ideas for enjoying this month to the max and ways that your garden could help you sleep better too.

Also, a quick shout out for RHS Wisley, which is conducting a Citizen Science survey in its Wellbeing Garden and invites you to take part on 3, 4 and 7 July 2023. You can help the RHS develop the first-ever wellbeing garden blueprint to guide schools and hospitals in designing their outdoor spaces. As a thank you for your time, after completing the study you will be given a £5 RHS gift voucher. Book here.

Whatever you do have fun!

Make headlines with agapanthus

You may know that Agapanthus ‘Black Jack’ was named as the RHS Plant of the Year 2023at the Chelsea Flower Show recently. There are many varieties of agapanthus though and the spherical flowerheads will make a statement in your garden in the summer, in different shades of blue, as well as being draught tolerant. Some look like lollipops!

Create a garden haven to soothe your soul

Your garden can be your own personal haven, especially if you fill it with soothing plants and features. Start with a winding path away from the house, which can literally take you away from your daily cares to somewhere you can breathe in the fresh air and just ‘be’ – include a pagoda for rain protection! Plant a tree as a focal point, which also helps improve air quality, attracts birds and pollinators and provides shade.

And add some plants/herbs that will aid sleep and calm anxiety such as: mint, lemon balm, passionflower, lavender and chamomile. Ask us to help you plan it all – we did the garden in the picture.

Go somewhere new

West Dean Gardens near Chichester are in a beautiful setting and offer everything from a 300 foot pergola, attractive flint bridges over a pond, Victorian glasshouses and even the occasional surreal fibreglass tree! If you’d like to visit a public garden but don’t want to leave your dog behind you can even take it with you as long as it’s on a short lead. Details here.

Perfect pizza parties

Naughty but nice – outdoor Pizza Parties are this summer’s latest trend, especially as you can cater for vegetarians etc as well as loading on the favourites like this BBQ chicken delight from one of the top pizza oven manufacturers, Ooni. And we love the design of the funky but high end ovens from Delivita – really worth a look!
