Welcome to our September issue, where we’re celebrating our traditional month for harvesting crops with some ideas to please the taste buds.
And, for something completely different, read about RHS Wisley’s ‘out of this world’ experience below!
Honeysuckle haven
You may have fragrant honeysuckle growing in your garden, which is looking beautiful right now. You’ll see it on woodland walks and in hedgerows too. As well as the popular climbers, there are shrubs and some are evergreen and winter flowering. You can even buy an edible honeysuckle, with berries to make homemade jam.
Savour the flavour
It’s the season for fresh aubergines (eggplants); perhaps you’ve just returned from a sun-drenched holiday where they’ve been on your menu and you want to revisit the flavours? Here’s a handy video from Riverside, showing how to grill aubergine on a Weber BBQ, with crunchy nuts and fruits – scrumptious!
Life on Mars
RHS Garden Wisley has created its vision of life on Mars, which you can explore in the Glasshouse until 6th October. They promise ‘an astronomical horticultural experience in a Martian landscape’, using alien-looking plants and cultivars, to create the red planet. More details here.
Bushy Beverage
If you enjoy ale/lager, the Hog’s Back Brewery near Farnham is holding a Hop Harvest Party on 14th September. It’s to celebrate the first harvest from their new Hop Garden on Manor Farm. Attractions include live music, tasty street food, dray rides pulled by heavy horses – and, naturally, fresh Hogs Back beer. Ticket details here.
