Pruning, Training and Creative Stuff Team
Andy Kirkwood – Senior Head Gardener (Head of Small Projects)
Qualifications: NPTC PA1 & PA6 Safe use of pesticides, NPORS N602.
Drinks: Coffee with milk & one sugar
Biscuits: A fancy cookie or a Chocolate Hobnob, thank you
Andy joined us after 6 years at Architectural Plants where he was their Creative Maintenance team leader, aka Captain Leg-up. Andy has an innate desire to see what can be achieved with plants, often noticed when rummaging through the undergrowth, and coming out with a wide smile and getting a little giddy! With a keen eye for detail, symmetry and sharp clean lines, Andy loves nothing better than grabbing his shears or seccys and fine tuning the planting in our clients’ gardens. He also has a wealth of experience in planting big specimen trees and shrubs and can be found involved in new planting schemes and helping to impart his knowledge to others.
In his spare time: Given half the chance you’ll find Andy kayaking out in the middle of a lake and casting his fly out into the water, hoping to catch the big one!
Christian Brown – Head Gardener
Qualifications: City & Guilds Level 2 PA1 Principles of Safe Handling & PA6 Safe Application of Pesticides , B&E Car & Trailer Course, J1 Telehandler Forklift Course, FAA Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)
Drinks: White coffee please
Biscuits: Bourbons
Christian has been with us for a few years now, he joined us from Architectural Plants where he was on the planting team. He then has been a superb addition to the team, he has slotted right in, loved by all and he loves being in a garden. Rising from the ranks of Gardener to Head Gardener in no time tells you he’s a smart cookie, organised, knowledgeable and exacting in what he does.
In his spare time: Christian likes nothing more than sitting on a bank fishing, hitting the trails on his mountain (e)bike and socializing.
Tommy Elliott – Senior Gardener
Qualifications: FAA Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)
Drinks: Coffee, milk and a sugar, thank you
Biscuits: Custard Creams
Tommy was working at Sainsburys when he came to us looking for a career in horticulture. A couple of years on and he’s an incredibly capable team member pushing on already with an appetite to learn and enjoying the outdoor work, whatever the weather. Tommy is a popular member of the team with a great character, so you’ll be sure to see his cheeky grin and a pair of secateurs in hand.
In his spare time: Tommy is a passionate Charlton AFC fan (someone has to be!), Tommy also enjoys reading and socialising and has developed a love of running, often to and from work, as well as teaming up with Mike and Tom to do some ridiculous wet, muddy, miserable, trial of endurance.
Jack Barney – Head Gardener
Qualifications: NVQ Level 2 Horticulture, ROLO Approved Health and Safety Awareness Course, City & Guilds Level 2 PA1 Principles of Safe Handling & PA6 Safe Application of Pesticides , FAA Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)
Drinks: Tea, one sugar please, or coffee, either, thanks
Biscuits: Ooh… Chocolate Digestive!
Jack joined us in 2018 and I don’t think he has ever stopped smiling! But don’t let his easy-going manner fool you, Jack is passionate and knowledgeable about plants and caring for our client’s gardens. He likes nothing better than improving the gardens he works in, not just content with keeping them looking amazing he wants to better them and always has Graham’s and Chris’s ears about what could be done. Not only that, but he also likes to lighten everyone else’s day and help them love what they do as much as he does.
In his spare time: You’ll find Jack hurtling down a trail on his bike, although he has started cheating recently and using an e-bike!
Sophie Smale – Gardener
Qualifications: FAA Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF)
Drinks: Tea, one sugar please
Biscuits: Fox’s Viennese milk chocolate
Sophie joined us after having several jobs that she just didn’t find fulfilling; horticulture though has really clicked with her. It certainly shows, Sophie loves it all, whether it’s mowing, planting, pruning, or weeding, she finds it all smile inducing.
In her spare time – Sophie enjoys being outside, walking her dog, and working on her van (she’s converting it into a camper), this doesn’t stop her going off exploring and getting away in it now though.
