Making a fabulous feature of February
When the weather is cold or wet it’s easy to just hibernate isn’t it? What we all need is a reason to move and a focus to get us interested.
Well, this issue, we’ve got both! It might be a bit of romance that cheers you up, or a new project to get stuck into (like planning a new garden!), or a cause you want to help with. Or it might just be a night out – take a look at our ideas here and we hope you feel better for trying them out …

Rosebud Cherry
Aka Prunus Subhirtella, this lovely ornamental cherry tree produces gorgeous profusions of pale pink blooms during winter and early spring. It makes a great feature in your garden during the colder months, as flowers are followed by black fruits and its leaves turn an orange/yellow in autumn.
Focus on your garden
Making a garden interesting all year round is so rewarding and one of the ways to do it is to create focal points or features that people notice. You can make different ‘zones’ by using eye-catching borders, fencing and hedges and then fill them with differentiating features – think water (ponds, fountains); traditional (roses over a pergola, lavender, a seat under a tree), alpine rockery etc.
Or simply make a feature of one thing – like an isolated willow tree, or a pagoda for example. We can advise you on which features will work according to your garden soil, location etc – and help you bring your ideas to fruition – so have a chat with us!
Orchids after hours – a Valentine’s treat
If you’re craving warmth and colour this month, Kew Gardens has both. Enjoy their ‘Orchids after hours’ event, wandering amongst the vibrant orchids in the tropical Princess of Wales’ Conservatory. Add some Cameroonian culture through food, drink, music and performance and you’ll forget it’s winter altogether!
Helping garden wildlife in the winter weather
Did you know that if you have a pond that’s frozen over, you should never tip boiling water into it or break the ice with force as this can harm the wildlife. Instead, place a saucepan of hot water on the surface to melt a hole. Keep water bowls full of clean water for birds and feed them. Although bread won’t harm birds, it isn’t very nutritious so mix it up a bit – read the RSPB’s tips here.
Bushy Beverage
Valentine’s Day calls for a romantic cocktail and pink tequila could be the love of your life! Tequila Rose Strawberry Cream is a delectable blend of strawberry-flavoured real dairy cream and Mexican tequila (and it’s available in supermarkets etc). Here are some seductive cocktail recipes to try out with it
Until next time!
