Autumnal greetings!
In each issue of ”Fun in the Garden’, we try to bring you a flavour of the season we’re talking about, which we hope we’ve done this time. In fact we think we can go one step further by also mentioning that if you visit Wisley gardens between 12th – 16th October, you can experience its Festival of Flavours from all around the world, with tips and cook-ups from global celebrity chefs!
And while we’re on the subject of getting out and about, check out the free tickets being offered by The National Trust below. Also, to brighten the autumnal days and those dark evenings, we’ve news of a great Oktoberfest event near Dorking – well, it would be rude to miss it wouldn’t it?
Whatever you do this month, we hope you have a great time in your gardens and further afield.

Don’t forget some heather!
If you’re wondering how to add colour to your garden this winter, heathers produce an attractive display of small flowers across various seasons, are drought-tolerant and provide nectar for bees. Well worth considering!
The shape of things to come
Conifers get overlooked but are an excellent way to add structure, colour and texture to beds and borders when summer blooms have long gone.
Birds love them and you can get loads of different types, from miniature and dwarf varieties for rockeries to mighty trees, or those that make good hedges.
Here are 10 of the RHS’s best smaller varieties.
Accommodating squirrels and birds
Squirrels are a heartening sight and there’ll be plenty around gathering acorns and other nuts and seeds this autumn. But they can be a nuisance when they’re eating all the food in your bird feeders! Our friends the RSPB have some tips on how you can prevent this here.
National Trust – get your free visit!
Our great institution The National Trust is offering a free visit to one of the wonderful places in its care if you hurry! If you’re already a member, take a friend along. Grab your chance to enjoy a top day out – it’s for a limited time only so click here for details.
Bushy Beverage
This Oktoberfest it seems a shame to waste the chance to bring Bavaria to Surrey – party with Dorking Brewery! Savour a selection of guest German beers and delicious authentic food from The Austrian House. Choose from 15th or 16th October – all adult tickets include a free pint of Dorking Brewery beer or free soft drink. Prost!
Until next time!
This time of year is perfect for planning garden design and landscaping work – that way you can get it done before the summer. It’s also easier to move and relocate plants and shrubs over the winter when they aren’t growing or flowering – and there’s less wildlife to disturb. To start the ball rolling and for ideas, you can book your free Bushy garden appraisal here.
